Batman: Arkham City Review

This game took something great and made it even better. Batman: Arkham City surpasses Arkham Asylum in every way possible. Though the story was a bit of a mess, and the side missions and Riddler trophies were sometimes repetitive, I still enjoyed every bit of it. This is definitely a good game for fans of both Batman and Arkham Asylum.

The combat system is practically the same as Asylum, except more combos and gadgets. Though the fighting may become tedious, this game is definitely not boring! Nearly every encounter has different enemies than the encounter before. They have even added new enemy types to the game including armored enemies and shield enemies. These enemies need special tactics to be taken down and you will need to adjust your strategy when you get into a fight with them.

Batman Arkham City 1The story of this game is completely crazy!  Every five minutes brings a new villain that you have to hunt down. This doesn’t really make that much sense. One minute you are pursuing the Joker and the next you are battling Solomon Grundy in a giant hole in the floor. This made me lose interest in the story very quickly, but it didn’t really take away that much from my experience because I wasn’t expecting a 5-star story line with amazing plot twists and dynamic characters. I came for a great Batman game and that’s what I got. Also the Game Mode Plus is very interesting and unique.

The boss battles are pretty much the same as Arkham Asylum except they are slightly better. The Mister Freeze fight, for example, is unique and you need some skill to beat him. These boss battles seem natural and make the game less repetitive.

The Riddler Trophies are something that I need to talk about, considering you will spend most of your time playing the game finding these annoying things. Do they really need 440 Riddler Trophies, especially since most of them are super easy to figure out how to get? If they put only 100 of them on the map, but made them really hard, I would probably think they were really interesting.   As they are, they are pretty monotonous.  I gave up after collecting twenty. Rocksteady, can you please keep the Riddler Trophies out of the buildings, because that just makes it a pain in the buttocks! The trophies are an interesting idea, but they need a lot of improvement.

Batman Arkham City 2The side missions in this game are VERY repetitive and not rewarding at all!  Most of the time you do the same thing over and over until you find the villain and put him into a cage. THAT’S IT! I know, exciting, right? At least make it so when you complete a side mission, you unlock an upgrade or something like that! Unless you want to complete this game 100% or you’re a Batman addict I wouldn’t mess with them.

Overall, I give this game and 8/10. Yes this game is a bit rusty, but with a few tweaks, Rocksteady can make it perfect. I had a very smooth playing experience (on Xbox 360) with no bugs or glitches. This game is recommended to all, and it is worth the cost.
