Call of Duty: Black Ops Review

Call of Duty: Black Ops makes shooting countless enemies really fun in it’s exciting multiplayer and short singleplayer. In fact, it’s probably the best game in the series, but does that mean much at all?

Black Ops’ singleplayer is what the developers should work on next. Honestly, it’s a bore. Go here, shoot this. Go here, shoot this. Most of the time, it seemed as if the game was trying to be too much of a movie. All the levels try so hard to outdo the previous one by adding blinding explosions at every turn. No new combat elements were added to the series either. Everything is just the same. Good thing it doesn’t last long though. The campaign takes less than 10 hours to complete.

I have to admit, the story in Black Ops is a bit better than previous Call of Duty titles. Seeing the effects of the cruel Nova gas in the game lets you know what kind of evil you are up against. The story is told in flashbacks to the 1960s, and they are done really well. I could follow along with no problem.

On the other hand, multiplayer is excellent. It’s fast, fun, and addicting. The maps are great even though they are small. Nuketown, my personal favorite, has great Domination and Capture the Flag matches. The map design allows you to always be in the action while still giving you room for some strategy.

The multiplayer perks; however, are terrible. In certain gamemodes, you absolutely need Tactical Mask and Flack Jacket. Otherwise, you are useless. I wish the game would encourage more variety among classes. Instead, I’m forced to use the same class for every map and gamemode if I want to win.

Something that they improved greatly in Black Ops  was Nazi Zombies. Though it took me a while to adjust to the new maps, I found many more weapons and things to do than in the original Nazi Zombies. This new conntent was hard to learn at first, but I eventually began to like it. I still wish they added the World at War zombie map because I spent multiple hours trying to find the right strategy. Don’t try playing Zombies alone. It is something meant for 2 or more players.

Finally, I give multi-player a 8/10, and single player a 6/10. I had a great time playing this game, but the singleplayer was just garbage. They need to improve that or just get rid of it.
