The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Review

Skyrim is one game that will be remembered forever. It has gained a legendary status among gamers as well as reviewers, but does it really live up to the hype? Can one game really be that good? Yes. Yes it can.

In the first few minutes, you will create your character with an advanced character creation, which enables you to select a race and edit their face and body. It’s not as in-depth as Oblivion’s character creation, but it is much easier to use. I found no problem making my player look just like me.

In the first few minutes, you will discover that the great province of Skyrim, home of the Nords, is undergoing a huge civil war. You will get to choose your side in the fight, and rank up while helping your army crush the enemy. Also, you will find that a new enemy is coming to The Elder Scrolls Series, dragons. You will need to find out why these dragons are returning, and be able to put a stop to them.

The main quest is not too bad, and it takes a while to complete. From the civil war to the battle against the dragons, I felt like I had control over the story. You can even hear people admiring you as you pass by them in the street.

The combat has greatly been improved from Oblivion. Besides an improved third person camera, the magic and swordplay feels more lifelike. However, at some points it still feels like your just chopping through air instead of human flesh. Also, some things have completely been removed. Spell making, for instance, is something I miss.

The map, though large, may seem very plain. I realize that the province of Skyrim is meant to be this way, but you won’t be getting much pleasure from exploring the landscape. Skyrim, however; makes up for that by dotting the landscape with dungeons, barbaric forts, and thriving cities with scenic views.

Whatever Skyrim seems to be lacking is given to us by the amazing modding community. Bethesda goes out of its way to make it easy for experienced and amateur modders to create content. The terrible UI, for example, can be fixed by the incredible SkyUI mod.

Finally, we give this game a solid 9/10. Though this game is nearly flawless, no game is perfect. These few problems including repetitive voices or phrases, minor bugs, and a monotonous landscape force me to give this game an imperfect score. This game definitely is one of our favorites and even receives our Knockout Medal. I will be playing this for years to come, and you should too!
